Child Growth & Development

Preschool/School Age Observations

The purpose of these experiments is to discover if a pre-school child and a school age child understand that the amount of a substance remains the same, even if the shape of the substance is changed. These activities will help me manifest the difference between pre-operational and concrete operational thinking.

Actual Observation:
Isabella & Jacqueline are siting at the Kitchen table. Jacqueline introduces herself to Isabella and tell??™s her she needs her help, and asks if she will be able to help her Isabella on the other hand is wiggling in her chair and says ???yes??? she can help, Isabella also says ???What are you doing??™??™ Jacqueline responds back to her and says ??? I??™m getting this Playdough ready for you to help me with it??? Isabella say ???okay???.

Jacqueline takes two pieces of Playdough & divided it into two equal portions. Jacqueline asked Isabella ???Are these two amounts of playdough the same??? Isabella responded to Jacqueline and said ???Yes they are the same???.

Jacqueline then takes the Playdough and rolls one ball into a sausage shape. Jacqueline asks Isabella ???Is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball shape) or is there more Playdough here (pointing to the sausage shape), or do they have the same amount??? Isabella??™s response is ???There is more in this one??™??™ Pointing to the ball shape. Jacqueline asks her ???Why do you think so??? Isabella leans over in her chair and starts to laugh and says ???Because Miss Jackie, This one is bigger??? Pointing at the ball shape once again.

Jacqueline then takes the sausage shape and puts it back into a ball and asks ???Is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball that was not changed) or is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball that had been the sausage shape), or do they both have the same amount??? Isabella says ???It??™s the same??? Jacqueline asks her ???why do you think so??? Isabella says ??? Because they are???.

Jacqueline asks ???suppose I weigh these two pieces of Playdough on two scales. Would this piece be heavier(pointing to one) or would this piece be heavier(pointing to the other), or would they both weigh the same??? Isabella says to Jacqueline ???they weigh the same???. Jacqueline asks Isabella ???Why do you think so??? Isabella says ??? Cause they look alike and that??™s why the weigh the same???.

Jacqueline rolls the ball into a sausage shape and asks Isabella ???If I weigh these now, would this one weigh more (pointing to the ball) or would this one weigh more (pointing to the sausage shape), or would they both weigh the same???Isabella says ??? The ball weigh more Miss Jackie.??? Jacqueline asked ???why do you think so??? Isabella says ??? Because balls are heavier then a sausage.??? Isabella starts to laugh because she thought it was funny that Jacqueline didn??™t know that the ball shape Playdough was heavier then the sausage shape.

Actual Observation:
Jade & Jacqueline are siting at the Kitchen table. Jacqueline introduces herself to Jade and tells her she needs her help, and asks if she will be able to help her Jade sitting in her chair waiting for me says ???yes??? Jade says ???Why do you have that Playdough??™??™ Jacqueline responds back to her and says ??? I??™m getting it ready for you to help me with it??? Jade says ???okay???.

Jacqueline takes two pieces of Playdough & divided it into two equal portions. Jacqueline asked Jade ???Are these two amounts of Playdough the same??? Jade responded to Jacqueline and said ???No they are not the same???. Jacqueline asks Jade to remove some of the Playdough to the one that is smaller and make them both the same size. Jade goes and take the Playdough that was on the right of us and put some in the other pile and says ??? Okay now they are the same size???

Jacqueline then takes the Playdough and rolls one ball into a sausage shape. Jacqueline asks Jade ???Is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball shape) or is there more Playdough here (pointing to the sausage shape), or do they have the same amount??? Jade response was ???I think the sausage shape is bigger??™??™ Pointing to the ball shape. Jacqueline asks her ???Why do you think so??? Jade stand up in her chair and started pointing and says ???Because look at it it??™s longer then the ball and it has a lot more in it???.

Jacqueline Then takes the sausage shape and put it back into a ball and ask ???Is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball that was not changed) or is there more Playdough here (pointing to the ball that had been the sausage shape), or do they both have the same amount??? Jade says ???Now I think they are both the same amount??? Jacqueline asks her ???why do you think so??? Jade says ??? Because they now are both in a ball and they have the same amount???.

Jacqueline ask suppose I weigh these two pieces of Playdough on two scales. Would this piece be heavier (pointing to one) or would this piece be heavier (pointing to the other), or would they both weigh the same Jade say??™s to Jacqueline ???Hmm let me see I think they might weigh the same???. Jacqueline ask Jade ???Why do you think so??? Jade Says ???Why that??™s easy they both are a ball so that means that they weigh the same???.

Jacqueline rolls the ball into a sausage shape and ask Jade ???If I weigh these now, would this one weigh more (pointing to the ball) or would this one weigh more (pointing to the sausage shape), or would they both weigh the same???Jade says ???That??™s easy your just trying to trick me they both weigh the same.??? Jacqueline ask ???why do you think so??? Jade says ??? Because all you did was just change the shape???.

I feel that Isabella actions reflected on Pre-Operational Stage. Because during this stage she learned to use and to represent objects by images, words, and drawings. Isabella is able to form stable concepts as well as mental reasoning and magical belief. Isabella tend to pick her own view of what she see rather then the actual view shown by others.

I feel that Jade actions reflected on Concrete Operational Stage. Because during this stage is the ability for Jade to recognize the logical relationship among elements in serial order, and perform ???transitive inferences??™ Jade takes into account multiple aspects of a problem to slove it.
